Morgan City, Louisiana
After spending just a few days in Morgan City, it becomes obvious that life revolves around fishing and petroleum. Monuments of a shrimping boat named “The Spirit of Morgan City” and an oil derrick rising from the median on the main street not-so-subtly reference the two lifeblood industries supporting this sleepy southern town.Trent nostalgically remarked that the slightly industrial odor hanging over parts of the city reminded him of his father’s spring shop in Lafayette, and nearly every shoreline we visited was dotted with casual fishermen hopefully casting their nylon lines.
We quickly learned the roads and landmarks of Morgan City, foregoing the GPS in favor of turning down random roads simply to see if we could find a new part of town that we were missing. Morgan City conspicuously lacks the overflow of corporate chains clogging the roadsides of more populous American cities. Instead, local bakeries, grocery stores, gas pumps, and restaurants serve the people’s needs.
